Easy-living culture’ hobbles UAE sport

As the UAE faces the prospect of leaving the Beijing Olympics without a single medal, the country’s top Olympics official has admitted that hopes of attracting more young Emiratis into sport and challenging for future international honours rest on changing their “easy-living culture”. “The Emirati youth has little interest in sport compared to young people in other countries, with the exception of football,” Ibrahim Abdul Malik, the secretary general of the UAE’s Olympic Committee, said from the Chinese capital. “The life of the people has changed. Emiratis have a soft and easy lifestyle. But sport is not easy – it is hard.”...

In Folsom and El Dorado Hills anymore, people wanting to marshal their thoughts use a different spelling. The various martial-arts disciplines are so entrenched here that saying ‘the other soccer’ to instructors gains immediate nods of understanding. The kick, the punch, the throw-down of an opponent, the falling out of harm’s way – all are going on at much the same rate as is futbol soccer, but invisibly to the public until one walks by one of the more than one dozen dojos, or schools, that have proliferated around the El Dorado-Sacramento county line...

"Karate Man" teaches kids martial arts

Bruins teaches martial arts and defensive physical training - along with spiritual outreach. He puts a lot of soul into the physical footwork...

He's known as "Karate Man" to the kids who live on the edge of San Bernardino's Operation Phoenix area. In reality, he's Andrew Bruins, master elder of the Soldiers of the Cross World Evangelistic Outreach Ministry. But Karate Man is a cooler name and more to the point of his ministry. Bruins teaches martial arts and defensive physical training - along with spiritual outreach. He puts a lot of soul into the physical footwork. "We want to give these kids and adults a new direction by offering them spiritual guidance, physical training and outreach ministry - even job training," said Bruins, 47, a licensed and ordained minister...

Charlotte Craig Advances to Quarterfinals of Olympic Games

Olympic flyweight Charlotte Craig (Murietta, Calif.) started off her Olympic competition with a 4-0 win over Switzerland's Manuela Bezzola at the Beijing University of Science and Technology Gymnasium. Craig built a 3-0 lead in the first round and maintained control throughout the remainder of the contest. She moves on to the quarterfinals to face Venezuela's Dalia Contreras Rivero who defeated Craig last December in the semifinals of the Pan Am Olympic Qualifier, 5-3. That match will take place at 3:30 p.m. (3:30 a.m. EDT) and can be seen live at www.NBCOlympics.com.
