Fit for a kid

Area youth are getting both body and mind workouts through Jayne Boer's Fit Kamp for Kidz.

The Dunnville-based certified nutrition specialist and personal trainer received such positive response to her youth fitness camps this summer that a third week was added and is already filled to capacity. Boer's goal in organizing the Fit Kamp is to educate youth on healthy lifestyle food choices while also showing them how fun exercise can be. "It's great to get kids involved because it's amazing the lack of knowledge there is in nutrition and exercise," Boer said. "I'm making them more aware of the way to do things. I want to help them help themselves."

The first camp of the summer was for youth ages seven to nine while the second and third camps cater to youth ages 10 to 12. Part of each camp day consists of fitness activities at her Attercliffe home including swimming, volleyball and basketball as well as circuit gym training including a stepper, weights, balance boards, resistance bands and stability balls. Boer's camps also include special outings such as kayaking led by Grand River Kayak owner Ed Sullivan, tae kwon do led by Greg Segui from Premier Martial Arts Studio, mini putt at Grand Island Bar-B-Q, biking at Merritt Island in Welland and hiking in the Short Hills in Pelham.

Fighting for an Olympic dream

Winning nationals was a big step in Ethan Leigh’s (center) goal of competing in the 2012 Olympics.

Father and son bonding can be in several different forms. For Ethan Leigh and his father Tom, it was Tae Kwon Do. “He got me into it right before I turned six years old, after he saw that I was really into it he started doing with me,” Leigh said. 19 year old Ethan recently competed in the U.S.S.S.A Tae Kwon Do Nationals. held in Overland Park Ks., and took home the gold medals in Olympc Sparring, PTE Sparring and Team Sparring. This was Leigh’s first trip to nationals and he was not expecting this type of success. “I really didn’t know what to think, I just knew I would try my best, it was a good experience just to be there.

Winning the medals was just a plus but just getting to be there was the best part,” Leigh said. Leigh believes that after winning first place in Olympic Sparring, that he is ranked no. one in the country, this helps him believe in his dream of competing in the Olympics. “Ever since I’ve been in fifth grade, I used to watch the Olympics with my parents, and ever since I was little I’ve always wanted to go there, it’s always been a dream of mine,” Leigh said...

Tae Kwon Do Olympian hopes to bring home the gold

With hopes of winning a gold medal, another Oahu resident will be heading to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Anju Jason will be competing in Tae-kwon-do. Practicing tae-kwon-do is not the only way this 20-year-old keeps busy. He also works as a chef at Panda Express. "It is a good news for us have this kind of employee work for Panda Express and we feel so just exciting," says John Zhang, Panda Express area manager. "Good luck and bring us some medals (laughs) and we're so proud of him," says Gen Coloma, Panda Express General Manager. As a young kid, Jason grew up watching the Olympics and its been his dream to compete.

Ah, America! Where the music is epic, the peaches are delicious, and there is a weekly fight to the death of dignity called America's Got 'Talent'.
